How to Write a Bio

November 21, 2009 in Business Networking, Marketing, Marketing Techniques by Erin Norton Fiscal Networking

With social media growing so quickly, many of us are finding ourselves looking at hundreds of people every day.  As a consumer, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to differentiate between true professionals and amateurs.  As true professionals it is becoming more apparent that we must become better at standing out from the crowd.  One simple, effective way is to simply have a short Bio posted every chance you get.  Almost any social media site gives you the opportunity to do this, although the majority of people leave it blank.  So, here are some tips to help get you started on your Bio:

  1. Keep it Short.  A Bio is short.  A Biography is long.  They should want to know more about you when they are done reading your Bio. Sarah Palin is a great example of someone who, good or bad, sparks a curiosity and keeps us wanting more.  Even she admits I love to write, but not about myself

  2. Write in the 3rd Person.  Use your first name to keep it more casual, or both names for a more formal Bio.  For example: Instead of “I have worked in the banking industry for..”, state “Susan Booth has worked in…”

  3. Get to the Point.  State your profession within the first sentence.  Some people only read the first sentence, so at least they will know what you do.

  4. Describe Relevant Achievements.  This isn’t the time to be humble.  Any awards, certificates or even statistics will help quantify how you stand our from the crowd.  Keep these short and simple.

  5. Be Open to Constructive Criticism.  Have a few people you trust review your short Bio and give you feedback.  This will help ensure that your Bio is simple, interesting and leaving the reader wanting to know more about you.

  6. Update Regularly. As your career changes, or new achievements are made, don’t forget to update your Bio.  You will find your Bio easier to update the more often you do it.
